Mali’s vernacular architecture has long fascinated me and la Grande Mosquée de Djenné did not disappoint. The shapes of this iconic structure really spoke to me. The elegant adobe pillars, palm tree beams, petite windows, and ostrich egg-topped minarets left me spellbound and formed the foundation for this collection’s design.
Every Monday is market day at la Grande Mosquée. Hundreds of vendors, shoppers, sellers, herders, and artisans transform the area outside the gates of the mosque into a colorful, lively market. As I strolled between the narrow stalls, the rich hues and fragrances reminded me that despite its history, la Grande Mosquée remains an integral part of modern Malian life. La Grande Mosquée de Djenné inspired the designs in this collection, but it was the vibrant Monday market that gave the scarves their color.
