Malick Sidibé + Zainab Sumu
Limited edition of 140 t-shirts - Malick Sidibé x Zainab Sumu Collaboration
Malick Sidibé (1936 – 2016) was a Malian photographer noted for his black-and-white studies of 1960s pop culture in Bamako, the capital of Mali. In his lifetime, Sidibé gained an international following, and was considered Mali's most famous photographer.
His work was the subject of a number of publications and exhibited throughout Europe and the United States. In 2007, he became the first photographer and African to receive a Golden Lion award for Lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennale.
Sidibé’s legacy continues through his sons, Mody and Karim Sidibé, who manage his archives and continue to photograph youth in Bamako.
“Malick has been a big inspiration for me for a long time. When I was in Bamako, I made a point to find him. It took many hours and asking around, we finally found his studio. He was sitting with his sons, having tea. I told him how much I loved his work. He started to show me some old images in his archive, and the collaboration began from there.” – Zainab Sumu
